2019-10-11T11:51:25+00:00October 4th, 2019|Categories: Bonfire Hill Wines, Bruce Jack Wines, Review, Wine|

Over the past few months, Winemag.co.za has convened a series of tastings aimed at finding the best wines costing between R60 to R120 a bottle.  Our intention was to identify great everyday drinking – wines which offer refreshment and flavour under ordinary circumstances, are widely available, and don’t cost too much. Minimum stock requirements that producers had to meet was 300 six-bottle cases or 1800 bottles and wines were tasted blind by a three-person panel of experienced judges, with Christian Eedes as the roaming chair, using the 100-point system. A wide range of wines were tasted across the following categories: White [...]

The arrival of spring brings with it the possibility of a clean slate. Cape gardens are alive with colour. They remind us that despite all the turmoil we face in the current state of the world, there is a home truth that marks the resilience of the South African spirit. We survive the whim of the political weather, making do with what we have – encapsulated well by the phrase: ‘n Boer maak ‘n plan, and whether we come from an Afrikaans heritage or not, we will rally in the coming weeks as the world’s rugby nations become the topic of [...]

Once a year – for one day only – the wineries from Africa’s southernmost corner around Cape Agulhas come together to deliver a feast of flavours distinctive of this extreme wine growing area. This year the festival takes place on Saturday 9 November at the Black Oystercatcher wine farm. The wineries of the Agulhas Wine Triangle share a spirit for exploration and adventure as the pioneers of a group of exciting, new wine growing regions in South Africa which are characterized by their proximity to the coast, extreme, cooling winds and ancient soils. They are known for producing elegant, terroir driven [...]

Tackling the prospects of climate change by sharing knowledge and experience is one of the drivers behind the formation of the Agulhas Wine Triangle (AWT). There are currently eight (8) brand owner members, located in a triangle stretching from Gansbaai in the west to Napier, across to Buffeljags and Malgas in the north east and incorporating Elim in the very south. The locally-based members are Lomond, Bruce Jack Wines, Olivedale Wines, Sijnn, Black Oystercatcher and Strandveld Vineyards. The two other members are Ghost Corner and Trizanne Signature Wines both of whom source their fruit in this area. “Climate change has made [...]

Top 10 wines in the inaugural Winemag Shiraz Report 2019 announced

Syrah (aka Shiraz) has its traditional home in France’s Rhône Valley, where the appellations of Hermitage and Côte Rôtie are particularly acclaimed. South Australia’s Barossa Valley is also famed for the variety but South Africa is increasingly making wines to match the best of either of these two regions. It has become important locally occupying just over 10% of the national vineyard at the end of 2018 (second only to Cabernet Sauvignon among red varieties) and Winemag.co.za is therefore pleased to release our inaugural Shiraz Report. This year, 83 entries were received from 67 producers and these were tasted blind (labels [...]

The top five wines from the inaugural Best Value Shiraz Tastings 2019 have been released

Seeking to find the best examples of Shiraz between the R60 and R120 price points, the wines were tasted blind by our three judges: Joanne Gibson, Ndaba Dube and Trizanne Barnard with scoring done according to the 100-point quality scale. Shiraz is something of a chameleon grape, capable of producing wines ranging from fairly light and fresh (even austere) to rich and ripe (even jammy). Producers often claim that their use of the name ‘Syrah’ indicates wines made in the more elegant ‘Rhone’ style rather than the blockbuster ‘Aussie’ style, but this is definitely not always the case. Generally speaking, though, [...]

Team Africa is delighted to announce that it has been able to secure an entry into the prestigious Le Mans weekend. Greg Mills will be sharing a twin-turbo Bentley GT3 with the former F1 driver and Le Mans veteran Jan Lammers, who famously won the 24-hour race in 1988 for Jaguar, and has finished in nearly every one of the top-ten places in his distinguished career, certainly a good person to have on your side. As with Team Africa’s previous foreign forays, the team is reliant on a South African and Kenyan crew under the captaincy of former African rally champion [...]
