The WineMag Minority Report celebrates South Africa’s niche varieties. This annual competition highlights wines made from lesser-know cultivars with a total of less than 5,000 hectares under vine – think Semillon, Viognier, Cinsault and Malbec to mention a few. The aim is to encourage diversity and innovation in the country’s wine industry.
To ensure fair evaluation, a panel of experts blind-taste all entries, judging them solely on quality. This year, the Ghost in the Machine Clairette Blanche 2024 was among the top-rated white wines, earning 93 points and securing a spot in the Top 8. Another standout, Off the Charts Clairette Blanche 2024, also scored 93 points, receiving an honorable mention. Other notable entries included Ghost in the Machine Cabernet Franc 2024 (92 points) and Bruce Jack Reserve Stream of Consciousness 2024 (91 points).

The Minority Report is more than a contest—it’s a movement. By challenging the dominance of mainstream varietals, it highlights the rich diversity of South Africa’s wine landscape and the exceptional wines being crafted from lesser-known grapes. Whether you’re a dedicated wine lover or simply seeking something new, these wines are well worth exploring.
Cheers to the unconventional!
