The quality of writing in Jack Journal has been acknowledged with a Special Commendation from the national Sikuvale Journalism Awards. It was given for The Tea Thief in Volume 6 by Don Pinnock. He traced the undercover operation of the British horticulturalist Robert Fortune to steal the seeds, seedlings and recipe of China’s tea production during the reign of Queen Victoria. Dressed as a Chinese nobleman, he successfully penetrated China’s tea growing areas forbidden to foreigners and would have been beheaded if caught. His successful industrial espionage broke China’s monopoly of the tea trade. The theft resulted in a global realignment of trade, re-positioned British-controlled India as the source of top-quality teas and generated vast wealth for 19th-century Great Britain.
The Standard Bank Sikuvile Awards encourage and recognise excellent journalistic work. They are organised by the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) and the awards see the best of the best across various media platforms being benchmarked against their peers by a panel of top quality judges.
